Spam 101: Where not to Click

Alright kids, this spam situation doesn’t seem to be getting any better, Facebook spam, Twitter spam, email spam, SMS spam. So as a part of my ongoing invisible anti-stupidity campaign, I’ve decided to write this post. Here’s what you [insert negative adjective that doesn’t offend you so much but makes you feel stupid here] should know:

1. Do NOT click Facebook links that appear to be videos of babes in bikinis or skimpy clothing, a) no it is not awesome, b) no it is not OMG so funny, and c) no your friend did not like it, they’re just as ‘curious’ as you are.

2. That teenage girl did NOT kill herself after her dad saw this video of her. This has been going on for what, three years now?

3. No, you will never know who visits your profile, I don’t want to know who visits my profile, I know that you did not manually post that on my (and 30 other friends’) wall, but you clicked the damn link and so you technically did just spam us all.

4. Hotmail is not “going crazy” and you won’t be able to see what other people write about you in their emails and MSN chats.

5. And there definitely isn’t an app that shows you who blocked you on MSN.

6. Or removed you on Facebook.

7. Yes, I have heard of your special ‘event’ what with the thousands of tweets and retweets on my timeline, no, I’m not interested; stop sending out event links to everyone on Twitter. You cannot just shove your spam into the conversation. Imbecile.

8. And I most certainly am not going to send you my number in a direct message so you can spam me there as well.

9. I will not like your friend’s page if it’s not something I like; I’m not exactly interested in dishwasher spare parts.

10. If anyone from any telecom company is reading this: a) who the hell gets their breaking news by subscribing to your SMS service? b) I will not send you an SMS that costs me 1 JD so that you give me “saving” tips that cost another 1 JD/SMS. (Tip #1 should be: UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS CRAP) and c) I think people already have access to أسماء الله الحسنى and do not need you to send them one each day.

Bottom line, nobody likes spammers, so don’t click on anything that says “OMG!” on it.

Now comment on this post and win a free trip to Hada'eq el Hussein.

How Rumors Start

Let me give you a real-life example of how rumors start, I saw it today.

First of all, let’s define the verb "rape" shall we? According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary:
Rape: to seize and take away by force
And according to Dictionary.com, to rape is:
to force to have sexual intercourse.
to plunder (a place); despoil.
to seize, take, or carry off by force.
Obviously the first one is usually what comes to people’s minds first when they hear the word "اغتصاب" although a person is not the only thing that can be raped yeah? A land can be raped, for example.

Now what happened today is that news sites published an item that said one of the candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections in Jordan, is running his campaign from jail where he will stay for 15 days after his wife filed complaints accusing him of “raping her signature” to be literal.

From “Al-Ghad” newspaper,

Now, “raping her signature” or the term in Arabic at least, would mean that he forced her to sign papers, can you picture this with me, wife doesn’t want to sign papers, husband forces her to do so, she does.

Raping her (or another woman), on the other hand would be *cough* slightly different wouldn’t it? What with the actual forced intercourse that would be taking place, all the physical and psychological harm that would be done and so on.

So fortunately I had read the news before seeing this status message of some girl that is “angry” with a country in which rapists can run as candidates (and become parliamentarians). Needless to say it was viral and now lots of people actually believe it.

Now I’m not going to explain my stance of the whole election thing, not going to say my opinion about the government and not going to tell anyone why they should (or shouldn’t) boycott the upcoming elections, mostly because it’s not our subject now and also for other reasons that, again, I don’t want to get into here.

But, to read one word of a whole sentence, to take that one word, get it into another sentence, spread that sentence on some social media platform where others read, share and start cursing a country where criminals are parliamentarians is just… I don’t know.

I know the girl must have misread the news, misunderstood maybe, and I know that what the candidate did is still wrong, but for the gazillionth time, can we please check before we spread? (That is if we have to spread). And I'm not just blaming her, people still believe everything they hear/read.

Let’s see the following sentence,
I was sitting with Flan Al Folani who is a doctor in [insert your favorite hospital, markez se77i here] and he told this hilarious joke that almost killed me, I was laughing so hard.
A dude who is just so mad at doctors in Jordan comes to this blog, (hi there dude) he leaves the whole post and reads a part of the previous sentence, dude angrily goes and updates his Facebook/Twitter/Linkdin/YouTube/Wordpress/Buzz/MySpace/WhateverSocialSiteYouWantHere status to:
Dr. Flan Al Folani almost kills a girl by giving her a heart-attack.
Then people are outraged, furious, angry, how could he? I mean he’s a doctor! What kind of country is this where doctors are murderers? Where the hell is the Ministry of health? We demand that the Minister resigns.

Can we please not? I thought we would learn from the “Sarkozy Proposes a French Version of Ramadan” story. Obviously I was wrong.

The Ugly Duckling Goes Shopping

This is why sales people should be guys not girls.
Let me show you the difference as I imagine it,

Duckling walks into a makeup shop (because makeup makes the ugly duckling look ok :P)

- Angry girl in store, we’ll call her za3laneh, to herself: Oh no, here comes another one, I own all this makeup and she’s coming to take some of it without paying me a gersh.

- Duckling: Hello :)

- Za3laneh: … *rolls eyes*

- Duckling: I need to see the DucklingMakeupThingie in pink please?

- Za3laneh: … *Hands it to Duckling, rolls eyes*

- Duckling (with a cheerful tone): No I need the lighter pink please?

- Za3laneh (to herself): great, she wants the lighter shade, she knows that one is mine and I don’t want to give it to her but NO, she has to take it.

- Za3laneh: … *Hands one to Duckling*

- Duckling: That’s darker, I wanted lighter!

- Za3laneh: We don’t have lighter. (rolls eyes, thinks to self: why the hell would you want a lighter shade you look so ugly and you would look even uglier.)

- Duckling: okay thanks.

- Za3laneh:

Duckling leaves the store, she spent $0 and angry girl in store is still angry.

Now Duckling walks into another store, also makeup to make it easier to compare,

- Happy guy in store, we’ll call him Sa3eed, to himself: New customer! I have to sell her as much products as I can!

- Duckling: hello :)

- Sa3eed: hello, how can I help you?

- Duckling: I need to see the DucklingMakeupThingie in pink please?

- Sa3eed: of course, we have this shade, this shade and this shade.

- Duckling: hmmm… *examines*

- Sa3eed: of course this one would suit you best in my opinion (please God let me be right) you can try it if you want to.

- Duckling: *tries* oh I like it.

- Sa3eed: if you want, you can take this shade too for evenings.

- Duckling: (what the hell does this have to…) oh okay!

- Sa3eed: you see this has protection and it won’t leave your beak chapped and dry.

- Duckling: Oh speaking of that I need beak balm!

- Sa3eed: do you want it transparent, translucent or colored?

- Duckling: ooh let me see all of those.

- Sa3eed: this one is perfect for you; your skin seems to be… (Please God let her finish the sentence)

- Duckling: Dry! I have dry skin.

- Sa3eed: exactly what I was going to say, that’s why this one is the one for you.

- Duckling: *grabs it happily*

- Sa3eed: do you want me to show you our latest collection of feather trimmers?

- Duckling: ermm.

- Sa3eed: imported from Italy, no other store has it. (Rand: Oh you know you have a thing for Italian products too!)

- Duckling: okay!

… Etc.

Duckling leaves the store with $100 worth of makeup items she only needed one of, but she’s excited to try each and every one. She got robbed but she’s happy.

Happy guy in the store is happier, moves on to another innocent customer. And everyone is happy!

Ok, so why? Why this whole attitude with sales girls? Someone walks in, they say hello, have the decency to respond, or at least smile, this Jordanian kashra thing is getting too much, I mean you work in a store, you’re paid to do this, and customers are PAYING for what they take. Plus you most likely DO NOT own the store or anything in it for that matter.
In China they say “if you can’t smile, don’t open a store”. I think if we apply this 70% of stores in Amman will close!

20 Things I would Like to Stop Hearing About

(Or reading for that matter)

1. Why Apple is better than Microsoft and why Microsoft beats Apple.

2. How a Hijab restrains women’s freedom and the ban Hijab/allow Hijab war.

3. The heat: it’s summer, what did you expect? We bitched a little when the wave started but enough now, it’s getting old.

4. How you’re an activist, I’m sorry but tweeting about Palestine, women’s rights and so on is not considered an action of activism.

5. Your diet! So you can’t have chocolate cake, boohoo.

6. Why your job sucks more than mine, all jobs suck.

7. Your location at the moment, yes Foursquare and Gowalla users I’m talking about you, it’s too much info for me to know that you’re in the toilet right now. (People who use both: Seriously?)

8. Why you’re a “social media expert”, oh guess what, I have accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Blogspot! Looks like I’m a social media guru. Also, how you’re an entrepreneur and whatnot.

9. How you love your Gmail. And why everyone should switch to it ASAP! I don’t see Hotmail users dying.

10. Every single movement of your baby. Really? He had his first snickers bar today? Awww he’s playing in the bathtub? DO TELL MORE!

11. Why the entire country “needs to be burned”. Start with improving yourself before you complain about others, or better yet, if you can’t stand it, leave it.

12. How you’re pissed that you got a driving ticket, guess what, you were parked in a no parking zone.

13. Every single thing you eat and drink. Don’t you have anything else to talk about? Just talk about the specials, that would be enough.

14. The oh-so-awesome and endless features of your oh-so-awesome shiny new gadget.

15. Your significant other’s flaws. 3eib!

16. How you’re helping the poor and feeding the hungry, you shouldn’t be bragging about this, the whole point of giving (especially if you’re doing it for Allah) is to keep silent about it. You can encourage people to give without saying that you do.

17. Criticism of every word that girl you hate says, and what she does, okay, you hate her, doesn’t mean that all her actions are wrong!

18. The fact that you’re funny, kind or cool. I think people should decide that don’t you? Who the hell calls himself “funny”?

19. How you're an amateur photographer. Again, sorry, but your Facebook profile picture that people said was nice is not considered photography.

20. How you can't get the girls/guys to stop following you and expressing their admiration.

Let’s see, is there anything left for people to talk about or did I just ask people to stop talking?

Let me do some talking:

I am a funny, cool activist and entrepreneur, I LOVE my new phone and my new laptop and the operating systems on both of them, they help me with my social media career, especially when I’m at my office in Amman. Which I’m glad has AC because this heat wave is making my brain melt inside my skull, although the job sucks and I hate this girl at work who’s really fat and should go on a diet, speaking of diets, I’m soooo craving some cheesecake right now but I can’t have any :’( although I did have some atayef last night, but that was only because I was so upset because the stupid policeman gave me a parking ticket, I’m so glad I’d already dropped my friend and her super cute baby, because I can’t handle seeing him cry, he’d just had his first falafel sandwich, I told her to email me the amazing pictures that I took of him on my Gmail, it’s sooo much better than Hotmail, I can’t believe I was living with it for years! I finally got rid of those stupid emails that this stalker has been sending me, I’m telling you, all guys should be shot, then we would have a nice country to live in, oh except some girls must die too, I guess that’ll leave me, my family and some friends, but I would leave the poor people, because I LOVE to help the poor, the other day I saw this… Get what I’m saying?

In Case You Didn’t Know

At work, we placed an ad in the newspaper last week announcing a job vacancy for a position, let’s just say that this position requires excellent communication skills (verbal and written) more than any other skill.
Now I don’t know what my boss was thinking when he told me I’ll be handling the applications (mesh 3arfeh shw dakhalni) anyway, I’ve been receiving all sorts of CVs with and without cover letters and the only thing I can say is that we’ll never go anywhere unless we start taking things like these seriously, here are a few things that got me shaking my head:

1. You don’t just toss your CV in an email and send it, no subject, no hello, no greetings, no dear sir no nothing! We’re not collecting CVs in a basket like charity.

2. If you work in marketing or sales, please don’t send offers at the careers email! Seriously, are you that desperate? You’re collecting emails from job ads and spamming them now? (And no it wasn’t automatically sent).

3. You don’t use “u” instead of “you”, “r” instead of “are”, and so on, in your cover letter. You’re writing a formal letter for God’s sake!

4. I think it would be better if you omit the “could you read my CV carefully?”

5. You send your CV from your email, not someone else’s, everyone has an email, the deadline is not in 5 minutes, get off your butt and go send your own CV, don’t tell me not everyone has access to internet and all that stuff, you can give your password to someone you trust and have them send it for you.

6. I’d prefer if your sender name is not “Lulu Lulu”, “big boss”, “rrr sss” or anything that sounds like “Queen Latifa” even if your name is on the CV.

7. When you say “my CV is attached” I should be able to find it with the attachments, I could be asking for too much here but I’d really like to take a look at that.

8. If you can read a font of size 7.5, good for you. Why would you want to torture others?

9. Don’t copy and paste your CV in the message body! I appreciate the formatting but please attach a file.

10. Why would you send me two CVs? Which one am I supposed to consider?

11. If you’re going to be including a photo of you in your CV, it would be better if it wasn’t one from a makeup ad, so you’re a makeup model or something, why would I want to see a black and white close-up of you with your hand on your cheek?

12. Windows 95, 98 and XP are not computer skills; don’t write them in a list with bullets and stuff to make your CV longer.

13. I never really got the “interests” section in a CV but if you must, “beauty issues” and “shopping” are not things that will help you get hired, and speaking of that,

14. Internet browsing” is not work experience. How is that work experience?

15. Don’t you think that writing your GPA sounds better than writing “average = excellent”?

Now I know many people will be thinking “oh how arrogant of her to say that about people who send her applications”, well bite me, I just gave you 15 Dos and Don’ts, in my own way.

10 Signs You’re an Awkward Turtle

I tend to be really awkward when meeting people for the first time, this usually happens on the first and maybe second times I meet them but then fades away and I become the opposite, anyway, if you’re still unsure whether or not you are an awkward person, here are the major signs (I have most of them most of the time):

1. When you meet someone new, the conversation goes like this:

You: hey
Them: hey
You: how are you?
Them: good how are you?
You: good how are you?
Them: :S

2. Your only response to compliments like “you look good today”, “I like your blouse”, “I like your scarf”, “I think you’re smart”, “you have such a beautiful skin”… etc, is a big goofy smile and possibly a “thanks” (which is not the way it’s done in the Arab world because there is a certain reply for every type of compliment.)

3. You respond to the phrase “it was nice to meet you” with a “hehe”.

4. When you’re about to meet someone important, you plan a whole nice conversation in your head with all the right things to say only to end up with the same goofy smile and a stupid look in your face that says “hey I’m probably the dumbest person you’ll ever meet so don’t even try”, you also slap yourself repeatedly after that meeting.

5. When you meet someone you’ve heard of but never actually met, you end up staring at their hair, eyes, nose… etc only because that’s not how you pictured them to be, in your stupid messed up mind that is, which makes them uncomfortable.

6. At social gatherings, you wait for people to come talk to you and invite you to sit with them, otherwise you’re just playing with your phone (which has nothing on it to play with so you start reading the old messages in your inbox).

7. If you meet another awkward person like you, you’ll probably need a third person to start a conversation or it’s going to be “it’s really hot today” “yeah, it’s the heat wave” “yeah”.

8. There were lots of instances where people changed the subject right after your valuable contribution to the conversation.

9. You want to call someone:

-hello?
-hello?
-hello?
-hello?
And there is nothing wrong with the reception.

10. You can’t order delivery to save your life!

On a final note, if you’re a guy, and one or more of the above points apply to you, when you meet a girl for the first time, please, please refrain from making jokes. I think you know that I have your best interest in mind.

Why Twitter Has Been Down Since the Beginning of the World Cup.

If you’re on Twitter then you’ve probably been seeing more of the Fail Whale than your family lately, I think it’s World Cup-related, why? Let me tell you:

1. On the opening day there were too many tweets from excited football fans all over the world. Twitter failed.

2. During the opening match Al-Jazeera Sport viewers suffered from the very poor signal of the channel because someone (God knows who) tried to sabotage their authorized transmission of the FIFA World Cup and there were too many tweets from people either complaining or predicting who did it, everyone had his/her own theory. Twitter failed.

3. The second match was France vs. Uruguay. The French have really, really long words with unnecessary extra letters, this called for more tweets since the characters are limited to 140, too many French tweets. Twitter failed.

4. Next match: South Korea vs. Greece. I’ll list the names of the Greek team from FIFA.com:
Konstantinos CHALKIAS
Giourkas SEITARIDIS
Christos PATSATZOGLOU
Nikos SPIROPOULOS
Vangelis MORAS
Alexandros TZIOLIS
Georgios SAMARAS
Avraam PAPADOPOULOS
Angelos CHARISTEAS
Georgios KARAGOUNIS
Loukas VYNTRA
Alexandros TZORVAS
Michail SIFAKIS
Dimitrios SALPINGIDIS
Vasileios TOROSIDIS
Sotirios KYRGIAKOS
Theofanis GEKAS
Sotiris NINIS
Sokratis PAPASTATHOPOULOS
Pantelis KAPETANOS
Konstantinos KATSOURANIS
Stelios MALEZAS
Athanasios PRITTAS

Now such names call for longer tweets, again, too many Greek tweets. Twitter failed.

5. Argentina vs. Nigeria: Well just consider the populations of both countries plus Argentina fans all over the world plus Messi fans that know nothing about football but are supporting Argentina because he's with them. Too many Tango tweets. Twitter failed.

6. Next: England vs. USA, 1-1, the American goal was clearly the English goalkeeper’s (or the ball’s) fault, English supporters were very unhappy blaming their goalkeeper for costing them 2 points, and you know when English people are angry they’re really angry. Too many angry English tweets. Twitter failed.

7. Algeria vs. Slovenia: Algeria, the only Arab team to qualify to the World Cup after a vicious battle against Egypt for the last African spot in WC, lost 1-0 to Slovenia, now Algerians were “shocked” and all the Egyptian supporters were talking about what Egypt could’ve done had it qualified instead. Too many Egyptian what-ifs. Twitter failed.

8. Serbia 0-1 Ghana: Twitter was fine at the time of this match.

9. Germany 4-0 Australia, too many tweets because there were many goals, the match with the highest number of goals so far. Too many happy Germans (and German football fans) tweeting times four goals. Twitter failed.

10. Netherlands 2-0 Denmark: angry Danes because of Daniel Agger's own goal, long Dutch tweets because of, well, long Dutch words, (according to Google Translate, the words “Dutch football” translate to “Nederlandse voetbal” in Dutch, also, with names like Giovanni Van Bronckhorst and Maarten Stekelenburg in the Dutch team, you need longer tweets. Twitter failed.

11. Japan 1-0 Cameroon: everyone was talking about how the Japanese player who scored the goal is called Keisuke Honda and making jokes about cars :) too many Honda jokes. Twitter failed.

12. Italy 1-1 Paraguay: well Italians talk too much and too fast so they probably tweet like that too, also, too many happy Italy-haters out there. Twitter failed.

13. New Zealand 1-1 Slovakia: well Twitter was also fine, although I guess some people tweeted when New Zealand’s Winston Reid scored during the additional time, but not too many.

14. Côte d'Ivoire 0-0 Portugal: upon seeing Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, and what with the lack of goals, people started discussing their favorite shampoo brands and some actually defended Ronaldo’s choice: Johnson&Johnson's No More Tears. The heated argument caused the overload. Twitter failed.

15. Brazil 2-1 Korea DPR: all those Brazil fans were tweeting their disappointment with the Brazilian team’s performance against a team that qualified for the World Cup twice since the beginning of the tournament in 1930. Too many Brazil supporters, too many Brazil haters making fun of sad fans. Twitter failed.

16. On top of that, tweets about how annoying (or awesome) the Vuvuzela is, people asking FIFA to ban it because it’s too loud, others saying it’s cool and they like it and other Vuvuzela-related tweets. Too many loud tweets. Twitter failed.

And that's just the beginning, we haven't even seen the big matches yet, I hope the Fail Whale survives this month.

Note: no offense intended to any of the nationalities I mentioned, this is just for fun and all the teams and their countries are good people :)

Random Thoughts

They’re building a complex or something right next to where I work which means 8 hours of headache every day at work, plus 6 more hours of side effect headache after I get home. Not pretty, and it makes the simplest noise a real pain. It reminds me of that episode of Tom & Jerry when Jerry takes the end of a stethoscope Tom is wearing and screams in it to blow Tom’s head off.

People need to learn how to walk, I don’t get people who walk backwards or sideways, a lady stepped on my foot on Saturday and it still hurts me, plus it turned blue. No offense to anyone overweight but people who are should pay extra attention because they can cause more damage :( oh and not to mention women in heels! Maybe we should go back to crawling.

Before people in Jordan start talking about recycling, I think we should start with using trash cans and learning that the right place to put your trash is inside the garbage dumpster and not beside it. And don’t get me started on the aftermath of a hash w nash day out!

Since people like to do the things they shouldn’t be doing, and since junk food is more desired than healthy food, and since people seem to want to touch anything with a label that says “don’t touch”, and since people hate doing stuff that are good for their health, then why don’t we start a “Start Smoking and Don’t Quit” campaign? Shouldn’t that be successful? I think it’s worth a shot.

When people learn a new language, the first things they learn are the meanings of swear words and how to say thank you, that’s the spirit of forgiveness at its very best.

I think a feminist is someone who has been blessed to have all the right women in their life, similarly, a sexist is someone who’s so unlucky to have some really horrible women in theirs, we should have a feminist and a sexist swap lives for a week or two and see if they change their ideas.

That’s enough takhbees for today.

Do You Watch Syrian TV Series?

I like Syrian TV shows, I find them more realistic than American shows (what with the lack of people jumping off buildings and landing safely, plus in a Syrian show, when you’re shot you’re shot, end of story) and they’re the perfect Ramadan accessory after Salat El Tarawee7 and all the food before that.

The thing is, I don’t know how some directors seem to miss (or ignore) some tiny yet important details, things like women waking up in the morning with every product in the makeup family on their faces, the awful wigs that they make the actors and actresses wear, particularly when they need a blond girl for some role, and close-ups of bad teeth, very bad teeth.

My favorite is when the show’s events take place in the early 20th century or so like Bab Al Haara for example, and everyone in the cast is wearing, let's say, clothes that are suitable for that period of time, females wear long modest dresses, traditional Syrian costumes and veils that cover most of their hair, yet, they have tattooed eyebrows! Now correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think women in the 20s of last century had their eyebrows tattooed, I can turn a blind eye to the sculpted nose and collagen (or whatever it is they inject these days) injected lips, but the tattoos? Can’t they just fake them? They fake moustaches!

Here’s what I’m talking about:

Got something else to share?

UJ Website Fail

This is from the University of Jordan's website, the Faculty of Graduate Studies specifically. I wonder when we will start taking these details seriously.
