It is not really a mystery, Rand. This was solved long time ago. Try standing on one leg in the dark, and see how it is really hard to keep your balance, even though it is a piece of cake when you can see what is around you.
The thing is, your equilibrioception, or sense of balance depends on visual input, as one of many other inputs, to balance your pose and gait. If the visual input was, lets say, lacking in features that may be used to gauge your balance, you will suffer a slight loss of balance which will translate to this weird phenomenon over long distances. Thanks for the info, but still, it is a mystery: why can't we walk in a slanted line for example? Or in a zigzag-like path? Why the swirls & curls? And why do we return to the start point?
You suffer a slight loss of balance toward one of your sides, which make you move incrementally toward it after each step; this will make you draw a circle, not a zig zag or a slanted line.
